Adding more Memory space

I started a backup on my PC then got a message that there was not sufficient room for the backup. I absent-mindedly turned it off before I went to the shop to purchase an external hard drive. Came back and when I press the on button, the light comes on yellow but noting appears on the screen (monitor says there is no signal) and the light never turns blue - normal running colour. I figure that it doesn't have enough memory to boot and am wondering if I purchased some RAM and installed it, would the machine automatically recognise the extra memory and start up or is there something else that would need to be done?

There's no such thing as needing enough memory to boot. IF windows is running slowly due to limited RAM, adding RAM might boost performance up to a point (past which there is no difference) but any amount of RAM should at least start it.

With the PC turned off and unplugged, remove each stick and re-seat it, and try to start again. Sometimes that can clear a condition where a static charge collects on the board.

Thanks - I tried the hold for 10 sec and then restart suggestion - for about the 50th time. It's not that. Thanks for the advice that it is not a memory problem. I have rechecked that the monitor is OK - triple checked on another PC to be sure. I now suspect that it might be a faulty component, probably a fan. Not confident to check them all so I'll take to a shop. Thanks for your help.
