I have an off brand motherboard model# 446 by a company named Jetway. The mobo documentation says it will support 1.5 - 2.0 ghz P4 478 processors. It also says "reserves support for future P4 processors." I was able to find that there are a couple of mobo updates available at the mfr. site.

I don't see any notes concerning the effect of these updates. I am a newb just tinckering with an old machine, trying to learn things. Is it common for mobo updates to impact the compatibility with higher speed CPU's? If not are there any particular makes of P4 2.0 CPUs that would be more or less desirable than others? Thanks.

with cpu there two issues with mb that you have to watch out for. one is the vrm on the mb if there made to handle higher voltage cpu. some of the older cpu were higher voltage as they were made for gamers and over clockers. the other issue with older mb from no name makers or pre built systems is the cpu cmos info that in the cmos bios file. if the vendor does not update there cpu bios file a lot mb wont post or read the newer cpu right.

Thank smorizio...
I looked again at the documentation to find reference to CPU voltage but could only find the following statement concerning overclocking.

"In S446/S446R, we have adding CPU Vcore Voltage minor adjustment and CPU Host clock step-by-step increment designs in BIOS Setup Utility in order to ensure system's stability while user approach over clock demand."

I also noticed mention of the chipset:
...SiS 645 Chipset Supports 400MHz System Bus in data transfer rate...

and regarding the CPU:
...Pentium 4 Processor in 478 Pin Package/Northwood Processor.

The latest downloadable version of the manual says regarding the chipset:
...SiS 645 Chipset Supports 533MHz System Bus in data transfer rate...
Could a BIOS or other motherboard update allow for increased Bus speeds or is this specification only applicable to mobo's released with this version of the manual?
Thanks again to everyone in advance.
