Two routers connected to one modem

Hello,
Well firstly, I must say that I am a NOT a networking person at all. I GOOGLE every computer and network issue I have to troubleshoot.

I have recently moved to a new apartment and due to an electrical cabinet outside my apartment my Belkin 750N router is unable to transmit WiFi signals across the entire house. I had a spare Sitecom 300N gaming router II which I connected (via Ethernet) to the Belkin router which is connected to the modem. I have changed the IP address of the Sitecom router and disabled its DHCP server.

MODEM --- BELKIN ---- SITECOM

WiFi WiFi & Ethernet
& Ethernet

Now comes the trouble. I tried all this arrangement last night and tested the settings. In general the connectivity is okay! The setting seems to be working fine (can access internet from both the routers using Ethernet and WiFi). The signal strengths are strong and covering the entire house (of course different SSID from each router and connected to the internet). However, when the sitecom router is hooked to the Belkin router I am loosing network connectivity at times and facing issues with network speeds. As soon as I unhook the Sitecom router; the internet connectivity is fine and the speeds are normal too.

Is this a drawback of having two routers connected to one modem or are there any network settings I need to configure my Belkin router to work normally? If yes, what is the other best way of having WiFi coverage in my house? I was looking into powerline adaptors, but could get any substantial feedback on its adaptability and usage (that is not as efficient as mentioned on their packs).

You shouldn't need to do that - it should work outright without the gateway setting.

I can't think of anything, really.

Can you try a different LAN port on the second router? I suspect that it might be one of the routers with a selectable LAN/WAN port, and setting it to AP made it a WAN or something stupid.

I have the same configuration as you have drawn (my drawings was messed up while posting on the website)

I have the ethernet cable connected to one of the LAN ports in the sitecom router. The network is working perfectly fine, I am able to access internet and other computers on the network from either routers using ethernet connection and WiFi. The issue is the prior to this connection (with Sitecom) the internet speed and connectivity was much better. As soon as I hook up the ethernet cable to the Sitecom router the internet speed starts to slow down and connectivity is affected. Application such as Skype, Youtube do not stream that well. Also, when I connect my cell phone using the WiFi, applications such as Whatsapp, BBM etc just DO NOT WORK!!.

Is it because of the two routers to one modem thing or there are some network settings to be reconfigured!

Did the check. IP of the second router is outside the DHCP of the main router. Also, the Default Gateway of the second router I have inserted the IP of the first router - this was the only way I was able to get connectivity through Ethernet cable from the second router, otherwise with the initial setting WiFi was working fine but not through wired/ethernet connection) Could this be the issue??

What I did was assign a static IP on my second router which is outside the DHCP range of the first/main router. Secondly I turned off the DHCP server mode on my second router. Restarted the router. connected both the routers with the LAN port and the modem to the WAN port of the first/main router and this was sufficient to have the WiFi running on the second router (that is accessing internet). However, when i plugged the second router via ethernet to my laptop it displaced Unidentified network and was unable to connect to the internet.

So what i did was assign the first/main routers IP as the default gateway of the second router. after this when i connected the second router using the ethernet cable i saw the same network name as my first/main router and was also able to access the Internet.

Now if this setting is not correct, what should be the setting to get the connectivity via ethernet connection from the second router??? I suspect this is the issue because of which i am experiencing slopw network speeds and snapping connectivity

Well I undid the gateway settings and it suddenly worked. The issue with network connectivity and slow speed is also resolved. It was the gateway settings that i changed that caused the trouble!!!

what exactly did you change as far as the gateway? I seem to be having the same issue. i have full network connectivity, but horrible speeds. I basically have the same setup as you, except i have two identical routers. Basically my main router is set to 192.168.1.1, DHCP is setup, with its own wireless settings. Router2 i have assigned it 192.168.1.2, it is set to bridge mode (its pointing to router1), and has its own wifi settings. i get great speeds for a little bit, but if i start streaming netflix or anything from router2, my hardwired connection into router2 speed tests are stupid slow. are you saying i should assign router2 an ip outside of the DHCP range of router1, keep it in bridgemode or put back to router mode? and change what with the gateway?
