Hi everyone first time poster as I've always been able to find solutions by search, however, my problem seems more difficult to find.

I recently purchased a new hard drive as I've been having problems with my computer for months and have only recently had the money to replace it.

Originally the hard drive worked fine and i began installing windows 7 on it, however, after its fine restart, while still in the process of installing, it would come up with an error message say "hardware was not compatible with windows" or something to that effect. This was not a big issue as a quick google search suggested it was simple to fix.

First thing i tried was changing the hard drive format (not sure if format is the right word) from RAID to IDE. This didn't work. The next thing that was suggested was to get the BIOS to restore to fail safe settings. This also didn't work and made my keyboard and mouse stop working with resulted in me needing to pull the battery out of the motherboard to get it to reset. When i next started it up i changed all my settings back to the original settings. On the next restart it hung on the device detection, however, it only hangs when it gets to the new hard drive regardless of the port it is plugged into.

My question is have i ruined the hard drive, is it defective or is it more likely that it is the raid controller/motherboard that is broken.

Thanks in advance,
Alister Davis

Contacted the place I bought the hard drive and sent it to get repair as they agreed it sounded like the drive was fault. If you don't mind me asking what's the reasoning behind this?

So just got the drive back from the place i bought it and they said that it was in fact broken and have replaced it. As soon as i plugged the device in same problem. Is it possible to break a hard drive changing the format for the sata ports from IDE/AHCI/RAID? Is it likely they sent back the same drive/ another defective drive? in case i haven't said already i have 2 other hard drives running in raid 1 on my computer that start and work its just this new drive that is giving me issues. Also tried booting with only 1 stick of ram with no results.
