ASUS 4-Way Optimization and Fan Header Question

Before I go ahead, I should say that I'm new to PC building.

The motherboard that I'm getting has 1 CPU fan connector, 1 CPU OPT fan connector and 3 chassis fan connectors but the case I'm going to use has 7 fan mount locations. The CPU cooler then has an extra fan so there will be 8 fans in total.

If I want to use more fans than I have headers for is it as simple as using a splitter? I've read that the fan headers need to have the right amount of wattage output if you are connecting fans using a splitter but I don't know what that value is for my motherboard.

Also, if I wanted to connect a second fan to the CPU cooler would it connect to the CPU OPT fan connector, the standard CPU fan connector or a standard chassis fan connector? I know you can connect fans directly to your PSU but I want to control the fans using the ASUS software.

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Hero
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO

Lastly, what type of fan would I need to connect to the 212 EVO if I did want an extra fan? Would any 120mm case fan fit or do CPU coolers use a different type of fan and do the fans need to have variable RPM if they are being controlled by the software or a fan controller?

Thanks in advance,
Miles. :)

Hi Ninjamilez
i would recommend connect the evo to your mobo cpu fan header and as for your case fans there are a number of alternatives such as these ,

or for a bit of bling in your case as well as multiple voltage fan headers for different fan speeds something like this

both are 4pin molex powered from your psu cable.

or simple 3pin fan splitters like these

there are lots of alternatives for powering your fans

that is correct you will not control psu powered fans from software , you can use splitters from your motherboard but i would only use one 3pin to two 3pin for each header , either that or purchase a fan controller or pick the voltage you want for each fan like the board i showed you or cables that are 12v or 7v or 5v
for case fans i dont really see this as being a problem

Okay, so I can only put two 4 pin fans on each header. What if both fans run at less than 1 amp and 12 volts? After some research I found that it is the specification on the motherboard headers. Would this still be a problem if I used two fans on each header? (not the CPU header)

I would much rather be able to control the fans using the ASUS software.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Two fans is all I need on each header so it will be fine.

If I get a second fan for the CPU cooler will it need to be connected to the OPT CPU header or a chassis header?
