I am planning on overclocking my CPU and after i do it i am going to play some intense games like battlefield in order to test if it is stable or not.
If it shuts down on its own because of overheat will it get damaged?
My cpu is intel core 2 duo e8400 3.00ghz
Also, which temperatures for this CPU are considered "normal" during overclock?

Solution
Not to worry.
If a cpu gets too hot, it will automatically downclock or even shut down to prevent damage.

I like to stress with OCCT. It gives you graphs of temps and will shut down if temps get too high.
OCCT will stress harder than you will ever see while gaming. If it passes OCCT or any other synthetic stress test, you will be ok for gaming.

I saw a video where someone was running a cpu without a cooler for hours and it just kept throttling down it never did fail. I am not saying this will be the case with all chips but they are pretty tough. If the thing overheats and throttles down a few times it should not hurt it just don't keep doing it . I have seen laptops get dirty and run overheated for months and never fail.
