How far can I overclock an FX 8350

Hey guys, I am planning out my new build and I was thinking of putting in an FX 8350. The mobo I have picked out is an Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, and I am getting a Corsair H80i plus Artic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver thermal paste (think I should get something else?). Are these parts known to be pretty good with OCing, and how far could I overclock my CPU without it getting TOO hot (to the point where it starts losing performance)?

Thanks for any advice and help!

8350 and your mobo is a great combo, one of the best - the actual OC will depend on the particular 8350 you get, it's not uncommon for folks to OC to 4.9 5, but keep in mind not all 8350s can go that high....so just start slow and slowly work your way up, monitor temps as you go w/ something like CoreTemp

Before you start planning to overclock, I would be checking for compatibility. That motherboard you have has an AMD AM3+ Socket, so anything Intel won't fit!

You'll need a motherboard with a LGA1155 Socket (for the 3770k) or an LGA1150 Socket (for the 4770k).
Or, change out the CPU for something AMD, your choice (depending on budget I would say)...

Like pfunkmd said. The 990FX is an AMD board meant for the FX line e.g. FX 8350. You want a Z77 motherboard to overclock the 3770K. I suppose with those you could get to 4.5ghz, but I think it relies on chance, you may get a cpu that can't overclock a lot or you may get one that OC's like a champ.

Unless you get a really good CPU, you will likely top out at 4.8ghz with the H80i cooler due to the amount of volts you would need and heat produced as a result. To hit 5ghz, you really need a 240mm cooler like an H100i. But maybe you will get lucky :)

Yes, I did decide to upgrade to the H100i instead. I want as much overclocking power as I can possibly get, I am planning to crush my old systems specs by a long shot!

I will keep you updated! I still have to buy it and shipping might take a couple days, but I will still come back here and post how it went.

That's the attitude. You are doing it the right way. You bought the best board you can get to overclock the 8350 and you bought a really good closed loop cooler.

Thanks for supporting me on that! I thought that was a good board for OCing, but I didn't know it worked specifically well for my 8350. Also, the H100i was only $10 more and it seemed well worth it.
Thanks again!

The most common "max" overclock on the 8350 is 4.8GHz if the motherboard supports it. Some lucky once can get it stabile at 4.9 or even 5.0. And the unfortunate ones will prob have to satisfy with between 4.6 and 4.7.
