Xeon 1230v3 or core i5 4670k watch dogs and other games?

Someone suggested to me that I buy a xeon 1230v3 instead of an i5 4670k for when my z87 asus board comes in. He said it would have the performance of an i5 with normal games and it can use the hyper threading with 8 core games like watch dogs and get the performance of an i7. Is there any reasoning behind this? Sounds interesting, and I might consider it if it makes sense.

The Z97 based motherboards will be released may 11.
I would point to one of those.
I think the refresh haswell will be released then if you are impatient.
Those will have a slight clock bump at the same price.
Z97 is important because it will support next years 14nm broadwell release.

If you are impatient, I would buy a i5-4670K which will be easier to sell.
The only difference from devil's canyon is that it may not overclock as high.
But, how high do you need to go? 4.0-4.4 is plenty for most anything.
Or... If $100 is not that important to you, buy the 4770K and be done with it. You will be getting a better binned chip. If you live near a microcenter, they will sell you one for $270.

I did some research on the supposed watch...

The xeon would help you in video editing but the i5 is unlocked and would provide better gaming performance your best bet is the i7 4770k but if your budget doesn't stretch that far then the i5 is better. N.B don't forget to choose best solution.

The Xeon is clocked lower to begin with.
A hyperthread is about the equivalent of a 1/4 capability core.
That will be of benefit for any task that is truly multithreaded. Few games are.
On the other hand, a "K" can be overclocked a fair amount, 20% should be conservative.
If you can wait a bit, devil's canyon i5-4690K is coming.

I hade to make the same decision a while ago and went with the Xeon E3 1230 V3 @3.3, and I am utterly happy with it. it gives you the same performance as an I7 4770 (without K), which is very cute! (lol! , As long as you're going to have your own graphics card, so you wouldn't need the internal graphics of that i5 (you didn't mention you had a GPU though), besides its TPD is also lower. You can go for an I7 4770 with the price of i5! why not go for it? :D

update: Just if you're not an overclocking guy!

The Xeon E3-1230 V3 is essentially an i7 4770 (without Integrated Graphics) at a cheaper price. I can imagine that the HT of the Xeon will prove beneficial with Watch Dogs, and will perform just as well as a factory i5 4670.

Idk about overclocking thats why I was leaning to the xeon 1230 v3.... I have a 770 btw.... the hyper threading is what really drew me in... I know that games are going to start utilizing the 8 cores (like watch dogs) and it might be a good idea to get ahead of the game...and if the devils canyon isnt too expensive I might see the benchmarks for that and compare it to the xeon... But im super impatient and I might just grab the xeon now and maybe sell it later if the devils canyon is "better".
BTW does anyone know if the Asus z87 gryphon mAtx board is compatibile with the xeon? Im using ripjaws 1600 8gbs ram

I did some research on the supposed watch dogs 8 core requirement. Apparently the developers overstated the requirement. Since it is not out yet, there have been no benchmarks. There are only a couple of games, like the FSX simulator that can truly take advantage of more cores.

dam i really wish watch dogs was out so i knew for sure what to buy XD. I guess ill wait it out as long as I can. The broadwell cpus will run on lga 1150 z87 mobos so I could just grab a cheaper cpu when the refresh comes out and wait for broadwell.

It is not clear to me that broadwell will run on current Z87 chipsets.
At this point, I have seen nothing definitive on that. I suspect not.
Regardless, for a new build, Z97 is the way to go. They are priced no higher than Z87.
