Things to consider when replacing a motherboard?

I'm somewhat inexperienced in these areas, but we've all gotta start somewhere, and with a good tutorial I figure I have a decent chance with these things.

Can I literally just get a top of the line motherboard and throw it into my computer? Besides the obvious, like how many ram slots, will it fit in my case, etc. What should I ask myself before I go and get a new motherboard?

Lastly, what is a good motherboard for extremely demanding processes? I need on that will help me out in the future by supporting at least six core processors and a heck of a lot of ram.

What parts of current PC are you keeping ?
Just upgrading motherboard may allow you to over clock aK series Intel CPU or add several graphics cards or more ram

Or are you starting from scratch with new CPU ,
Probably more important what do you use your PC for?
What operating system?
How old is existing system ?
What is exact CPU ? ( and socket)

I have only once replaced my motherboard (only) which was intel socket 775 DDR-2 based when my old one died.
I had great difficulty finding a new one .

What do you want to accomplish?

The motherboard gets picked AFTER the cpu.
The motherboard has little to do with performance.
If you will keep your cpu, there is little advantage to replacing the motherboard.

If you change out your motherboard, it is likely that you will need to do a clean install of windows since the installed windows chipset drivers may well be incompatible.
And... if your copy of windows is w7 and oem, you will need to get Microsoft to allow you to reactivate.

In general, top of the line motherboards are not needed or recommended if you have any budget limitations.

Alright, forget what I said about top of the line. I should have been more specific.

I'm not a designer or anything. A motherboard that will allow me at least 24GB of ram and at least a six core processor of a good brand will do.
