Firstly I'd like to apolagise as I've seen similar questions asked to death about. but I am still no nearer getting my head around what should be a simple purchase.

I am building a new computer and have purchased a full copy of 8.1 pro via MS so I have a valid key. however I cannot download an iso file from my current system as it is running windows XP. I also have a system running windows 7 32 bit in the house but I want 64 bit. As i understand it, downloading from this system will give me a 32 bit version of windows 8. I have no access to a 64 bit system, bar the one I'm building which will be without an OS.

I dont understand why it is so hard to download a 64 bit vers, Am i going about this the wrong way, or am i just being stupid?

Alternatively, If i pay the bit extra for the windows 8.1 backup media, can this be used for a fresh install or is this just a recovery disc?

Please help, why is this so difficult? My brain hurts
Many Thanks in advance
Karl

So without owning a 64 bit operating system, I can never upgrade/buy a 64 bit operating system? that doesn't make sense and surely alienates a lot of people with new builds?

Do I have no options, Am i forever destined to be stuck in a 32 bit universe?

What about the 'backup media disc' extra, is that able to do a clean install or is it just for recovery and repair?

Thanks for your help

Ok, Thanks for the answers. If i can do it via the backup media then there is no problem, I dont mind spending a bit extra for a hard copy.

However the MS website does not state what the 'backup media DVD' actually is, hence I was unsure if it was an instillation disc or just a recovery disc? So could anyone tell me if this DVD can be used for a fresh instillation?

If so, job's a good'un, if not I'm stuck in the dark ages

It must be an Installation disk, but I don't know if they send both 32 and 64bit. Normally if you buy Windows 8.1 off the shelf you get both...

Thanks for the help, I'll try and find out about the disc, if not partitioning is a great idea, just means more work.

Many thanks for your time
