Hi! First post here. Spent most of the day researching what I wanted and this is what I came up with.

I want a unit that will last for some years. I use my PC for movie streaming, on occasion games, burn some discs, and general use.

It stays on 24/7 to be accessed from remote locations.

I will have this unit built by someone once I find a suitable builder in the Kingwood area of Houston.

Here is my selection so far. Please feel free to comment good or bad or suggest changes.

I plan to add silent fans as many as the case can hold, and my monitor will be the 28 inch Lenovo Think vision 28 inch 4 k when it comes out next month.

Thank you in advance for your responses. Here is my configured system.....

2. You're spending a ridiculous amount of money on storage and the case, and no SSD. You should definitely include one.

Is this even if I leave the unit ON all the time? This is why I did not consider it. If there is a need I will get the 1 tb Samsung. I want the storage. My server is 18 TB and 75% full. I have a home theater, lots of movies.

Yeah on a single GTX 700 series you're only going to draw about 348W and that's a conservative estimate. If you were using two or three GPUs then the 1KW would be necessary. As for having it always on, it doesn't matter if you're using 550W or 1250W, you can leave these PCs on all the time.

3. 2 BD-R drives? You don't even really need one these days. All media is moving toward cloud...

First off what is your budget? If we knew that it would help to suggest parts.

Although I will tell you your funds are being very mismanaged. To start with:

1. Lose the extra lights, the card reader, and the thermal compound - you don't need these things.
2. You're spending a ridiculous amount of money on storage and the case, and no SSD. You should definitely include one.
3. 2 BD-R drives? You don't even really need one these days. All media is moving toward cloud computing and online distribution. The days of physical media are coming to an end.
4. A 1KW PSU is ridiculous overkill for a single GTX 770. A solid 550W will suffice.
5. For your uses you don't need 16GB of RAM or the i7, you can use an i5 and 8GB of RAM. Unless you're going to be doing some video editing then that's a different story.

Thank you for your answer.

First off what is your budget? If we knew that it would help to suggest parts. Budget does not matter. Quality and longevity does. I am the type of guy that drives a Ford F250 King ranch to go to the grocery store and never tows anything. Overkill yes, But I like my truck.;)

Although I will tell you your funds are being very mismanaged. To start with:

1. Lose the extra lights, the card reader, and the thermal compound - you don't need these things.

OK
2. You're spending a ridiculous amount of money on storage and the case, and no SSD. You should definitely include one.

So how do I play the rental Blu Ray movies? I also copy them to my server

4. A 1KW PSU is ridiculous overkill for a single GTX 770. A solid 550W will suffice.

I may want to upgrade in the future, I will probably stick with the PSU ( King Ranch syndrome remember ;) )

5. For your uses you don't need 16GB of RAM or the i7, you can use an i5 and 8GB of RAM.

Money is not an issue here so is this analogy still valid? Was thinking along terms of longevity here. Please advise.

Unless you're going to be doing some video editing then that's a different story.

thank you again G-unit for your response to my question. I do appreciate it. Tell me if you still think I am off base on some of these before I pull the trigger. I do appreciate the input.

Regards,

Ray

I noticed you did not list a motherboard, what were you thinking of getting for that? I would recommend the Asus Z87 Sabertooth, but you could go with one of the higher ones. Also, your ram probably is not 1.5v, which is the recommended voltage for the Haswell CPUs (recommended by intel).

Here is the faster 1.5v ram I found for a 16gb set:
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($165.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $165.98

How many DVDs and BDRs are you copying at a time? You can really only rip one at a time due to processor constraints. One BDR drive does the work of two these days.

Depends on what you want to upgrade, if you're going to be adding multiple GPUs then the extra wattage is warranted. But if you're just adding extra hard drives then there's no reason to add more wattage than 550W - 650W.

5. For your uses you don't need 16GB of RAM or the i7, you can use an i5 and 8GB of RAM.

Money is not an issue here so is this analogy still valid? Was thinking along terms of longevity here. Please advise.

Unless you're doing some super high quality video editing you don't need this much horsepower. For just movie playback / ripping and some light gaming you can get away with way less. There's no such thing as making a rig future proof. I know people want to get the most from their money but the only way to ensure longevity out of a PC is to enable upgrades as you go along. Again I will say with your budget that you're spending a lot of money very unnecessarily. You don't come out ahead buying the Cosmos II or the hybrid drives.

Try something like this:
