Hi all, I bought a 7870 Myst from my friend the other day. Vid card was working on his rig and I was present when he removed it from the PC.

When I got home, I removed my GTX680 to try out the new card, unfortunately the motherboard won't recognize it. (Code d6 in Maximus IV Extreme)

Tried out other PCI-E ports also to no avail. I tried seating my GTX680 just to check if everything's still working and lo and behold, everything's fine.

Which leads me to believe that the video card got busted in transit or as my friend was removing it from his rig.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I have quite a busy schedule and I'm sure I haven't exhausted all possibilities yet. really don't want to return it to my friend as I saw that it was working properly before we removed it.

All input will be greatly appreciated. thank you!

You need to install the driver for the new card. Look on Radeon's or the card's website

When you've installed it, uninstall the 680 drivers. The put your new card in.

code d6 error is 'no card'

Hi,
1) Please confirm if the error code appears BEFORE or AFTER Windows loads?

2) Just curious, but why are you replacing a better card with one that's not as good?

A stock HD7870 gets 79% the performance of a stock GTX680. I doubt even the best HD7870 would be as good as the worst GTX680.

3) The definitive test would be to re-install the card in your friends PC. If it fails there then we know the card is busted.

If the D6 error occurs before Windows boots then the card is likely defective, but if after it could be a software issue like Drivers as mentioned.

4) Two other tests:
a) Boot to an Ubuntu DVD (burn one then boot to it with the HD7870 installed)

b) Reinstall Windows on a spare hard drive:
- unhook all but the hard drive you intend to use
- start the Windows install (if it starts with no obvious errors then it's likely there would be no issues later)

SUMMARY:
It mostly comes back to WHEN the error occurs. Again, if after Windows boots it's likely a Software issue, but if before it's likely a defective card.

I'll try reinstalling drivers later. but just to give you a better understanding, windows does not boot when I use this card. I'll need to use the 680 to do the grunt work. thanks for the input.

yup, knew what d6 meant which was why I posted that it wasn't recognized.

1) windows doesn't load at all. so.. before.
2)I'm looking for a secondary card as spare plus I wanted to help my friend out. he needed money badly. yup, thanks for the link. I'm aware of the downgrade.
3) yeah, but I wanted to avoid this as he lives quite far and I simply have no time to visit him again. haha!
4) Thanks, i'll try booting Ubuntu. but pretty sure it wouldn't boot also. worth a try though.
5) worth a shot also. but might be too tome consuming for my taste. also, this would mean I would have to reinstall everything again. might not be worth the effort for a "spare" card.

thank you very much for your input!

Download display driver uninstalled DDU , then run it with old video card inserted and then click on tab that says clean and shut down for hardware installation, then while PC is off install 7870 and then install catalyst driver 14.4 then it's done.
