I have an fx4300 and an r9 270x wf and mc lags when on multiplayer, i read online that its because amd is not optimised for opengl. is this true? can i fix it, or is nvidia a minecraft goto?

OK, lets make sure that the OSD works. Do you have any other games? Try one of them. You should see Cyan colored text in the top left hand corner of the screen. Make sure that MSI Afterburner and the Riva Statistics Server are running in the System Tray.
It is hard to believe that a game as light weight as MineCraft (especially graphics wise) would lag on a 270X.

Try using an OSD like Riva Tuner Statistics that comes with MSI Afterburner. Try monitoring CPU usage, GPU usage, GPU temperatre, and framerate.

When you experience the "lag", first look at your framerate, has it dropped? If not, the graphics card isn't the cause of the "lag". Next look at your CPU usage, is it quite high. If so, then your CPU is bottlenecking you or there is a problem such as throttling or a background application causing the problem.

If your CPU usage isn't the culprit, look at the GPU usage and temperature. Is the GPU usage high? If so look at the temperature, is it hot? If it's hot, then it could be that your GPU is throttling. If it isn't then your GPU is actually the bottleneck.

If after all this none of this seems to be the problem, it's probably your internet connection, which is what I'm leaning towards.

I believe it's mostly an issue with the CPU.

AMD/OPENGL:
If your offline experience is good then it has nothing to do with the graphics card.

If you Google "minecraft CPU" you'll see lots of links to Minecraft eating up CPU cycles (because it's not well optimized) such as this one:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/332594-28-high-minecraft

Other than overclocking the CPU I don't think there's much you can do, but others who play the game might have more info.

AFAIK, the only difference between Single and Multiplayer games is that your CPU is more heavily stressed because it's processing information from other users. This is the reason why a game like Titanfall uses Microsoft's Azure servers instead of doing those calculations on the XBOX ONE.

ok i downloaded msi ab and my gpu usage in mc is ~20% and it doesnt say cpu usage anywhere (30fps and less)
fan speed 40%
gpu temp 40c

edit: In my task manager cpu usage is 20% to, minecraf using 1.5m k ram
Game runs at 250+fps in alpha

other notes: games been running slower since last week, but games like call of duty run at max at 60 fps, and ive done nothing to my system

ok now what do i do?

Once you've selected all the stats that you wish to monitor in game for display in OSD, run your game. Unless you change the position you want them displayed, the default is in the upper left hand corner of the screen. When you experience a slow down, take note of what each is showing. Hopefully you'll gain some insight into what is holding you back.
