that exact model of GPU is prone to the black screen issue, which is not by any meaning ignorable.
I live in Australia and this would be my choice;
http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/12444-gigabyte-r929...
Though it runs hot, though it's the stock cooled model, what a card for $429. Best if you can later on, get a custom cooler.

newegg has powercolor r9 280x for $233 after $20 mail-in rebate. for that price i would do some research to see if 280x crossfire is more powerful than the 290x. What kind of monitors are you running. I run three 23"ips monitors so I needed the extra hp from a 2nd card. 1 290x will run batman arkam orgins at 35fps at 5760*1200

well just giving you some options, drop the x and get the plain version with some water cooler
I been reserching video cards for last 4 months, I wanted the new nvidia maxwell card but the got delayed til 2015. The titan black is way overpriced as is the r9 295x2. My 2nd choice was the gtx 780 ti but those prices are still not in my budget since i needed two cards. I didnt even consider the amd card due to power requirements but poking around craigslist I found what I thought was a good deal, so Im happy now.
What monitor are you running?

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($409.00 @ CPL Online)
So Here:
http://www.cplonline.com.au/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-770-oc...
Then again pdasterly just posted a cheaper one... for not-Australia the Australian EVGA Range goes between $429 and $525

this is in Australia, not sure if those prices are that cheap after inflation.GTX 770 $409 surely you won't mind spending ~2% extra?
You can get it for $402 on MSY for the windforce 3X model, though it depends on what you do, both the R9 280X and 770 are quite similar when it comes to performance.

dual 280X s is much more powerful then a 290X, there is a huge difference.ive been hearing this and the complete opposite to this!
So you think a R9 290X is better then a R9 280X Crossfire setup, I used to have a 7990, that was better but i didn't like the fact that not all games supported crossfire.

I'd get a GTX 770280x out preforms 770 and its cheaper? hahah
actually, a GTX 770 is faster than a 280x, its not much, but probably justifies the price.
could you link me one?
