Some warnings:
- avoid monitors with LOW or NO customer scores
- refresh rate of 6ms or less
- I avoid ACER in general as I've seen a lot of bad experience.
- You should usually use DVI as your connection, but if you want HDMI for a BluRay player, console or whatever make sure it's included.
There is almost no reason nowadays to get anything less then a 1080p monitor.
- Desktop space increases as resolution goes up. multitasking becomes easier
- Unlike living rooms most people set about 2-3 feet from the monintor. 1080p resolution is clearly better then 720p from that distance
The only reason I would suggest a 720p monitor is if your dealing with entry level GPU's. running a game native resolution will look sharper then a high rez monitor down scaling.
Yes, There is. 1080p greatly increases pixel count which affects quality significantly. The higher the resolution, the more polygons can be rendered, and the more visual pleasing the game will appear.
