Whining noise from pc case, kind of high pitched.

Hello,

So i just built a new system, all new parts except the gpu and recently, well only when i run windows assessment to determine what score i can get, i hear this whining, high pitched sound coming from my pc case. I opened the side to try and determine where it was coming from but i couldn't. Its towards the psu so im inclined to believe its that. I will look into this more later on.

Doing some research people are suggesting it may be 'coil whine' although i dont know too much about the internals.
-Also people suggest that noise is due to over stressing the psu however i don't think i am.

my specs:
i5 4440
sapphire r9 290
4g x 2 g skill x rip jaws 1866
seasonic g series 650w
seagate barracuda 2tb
antec p280 case with ONE stock rear exhaust fan
TWO corsair sp120 Quiets at the front intake.
asrock z87m extreme 4 mobo

pc part picker told me i use 423w so i assumed i go towards 500 at fill load-- but i still have 150w headroom.

So can sometime tell me whats going on? Should i leave it be (as it only appears when i run the windows assessment) or if it turns out its my psu, try to rma.

thanks for the long read :)

More about whining noise case kind high pitched
  1. Whining noise maybe coming from your HDD

Re-run Windows Assessment Test. While it is performing "Checking Disk Performance" and your hear whining sound then it is your HDD making such noise.

It could be a bad fan bearing, hard drive, or it could be coil whine in your PSU or GPU.
  3. You should be able to narrow it down by taking the cover off. You can isolate each fan be putting your finger on the fan hub to slow it down (or power down each in turn). The other sources should be evident by putting your ear next to each source.

It occurs as soon as i begin it, during the direct x 3D stuff. I assume its my gpu then?

edit: opened the case and ran a game, similar sound is coming from gpu.

tried running the windows checker again but it doesnt diagnose direct x so i cant confirm
  5. Here is a video that demonstrates GPU coil whine very well.

  6. Ok turns out it was my gpu-- them cons of purchasing a 2nd hand component... god damn it! Thinking back now, i bought the 290 for $250 but found a store clearance of new 280x toxics for $325.. How silly of me.

Hopefully first owner either refunds me or helps me with rma :D
