Hi guys.

I have old notebook running on Windows XP and im using hibernate option because its a lot faster then normal starting. It has easy removable HDD so i often use 160 GB HDD like USB. I just shut down notebook with hibernate, pull HDD out, plug it on SATA cable in my PC (open case so its not problem) and im ready to go (just like USB). And there is a problem. I just did it like a described above and copied from PC to HDD 155 GB of Breaking Bad HD, everything went well no problem. Then I pulled it out and put it into notebook and started it. XP started without problems, everything worked just fine... but! Breaking Bad HD was gone... but physically its still there cause of taken space on HDD. Can you help me with this ? Am I right its problem of XP Hibernate function ? Something like, there was stored image of actual filesystem before hibernating and when i started it again that image was loaded and placed over actual image with Breaking bad so Windows doesnt know where it is ?! And its not visible even when i put it back to my PC with W7. When i run CHKDSK it freezes whole computer when is checking data files. Formating HDD is last option. Any suggestions ?

Hi

Unpluging a internal or external hard disk while in hibernation is not a good idea as you have found out

If you go to Device Manager, look at Properties in Policies Tab, Write Caching is enabled by default
(I was looking at Windows 7, I expect XP is similar)
maybe unchecking this may work.

There are utilities which flush the hard disk controller driver buffers & complete all writes which may help if run before hybernation
I have one called sync.exe (dated 2006)

( It is a Microsoft Sysinternals file from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb897438.aspx)

If Chkdsk does not fix the drive then Format will be required
Is there any critical info on the drive ? if so recover before formatting

What you are doing is just a drive failure waiting to happen. Keep the disk in the laptop and get a separate one to use for external drive.

What you are seeing is almost certainly due to how you use the drive, but it may be the drive has gone bad. You can do a disk scan using a utility either from the drive maker or the laptop maker.

Well fist of all thanks for your answers. You didnt help me tough. But nevermind i solved it like this: copied all visible files to other drive (Windows, Program Files etc...) and formatted HDD. Then I copied everything back and tried run HDD on notebook but there were missing files from boot sectoc ofcourse... so I had to repair Windows from Windows Installation CD and everything is fine now. And solution to my problem is not to use hibernate :(

to hang-the-9: get separate one... you think if i would have money for that i wouldnt do that ? Im student and i alone am paying my college and food etc. So I cant buy HDDs whenever i want...

Thanks for help.
