want to build a new rig. here are the specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230v3
Mobo: MSI Z87-G43 Intel Z87 So.1150
Ram: 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3-2400

I have a knowledge loophole though:

It wonders me that the 2400mhz hyper x beast is the cheapest in my store. even cheaper than most 1600. I know about the times etc and since it doesnt affect fps that much it´s just a price question for me here and the 2400mhz is the cheapest. the mobo supports it but is the cpu supporting it as well? can i even run them at 2400mhz or do they downclock automatically to 1600/1866 if the cpu shouldnt support higher frequencies than 1600/1866, etc. ?

Solution
The ram website will tell you if it s compatible with the ram. And the mobo site will tell you if the ram is compatible with it. I gather the 2400MHz is at 1.65V

Hopefully XMP will sort out what it will clock out without raising the cpu or fsb voltage too much.

ah ok. so if the cpu memory controller only supports up to 1600mhz I would need to overclock the system in order t get the full 2400Mhz from the ram. Intel XMP etc. ok. and a knowledge gap was filled. thx!
