So i opened a previous thread - about coil whine- which made me wonder about this one.
I bought a 2nd hand sapphire r9 290 for my new build for $250. 1ST owner used it for mining for a few months and then proceeded to sell it as he had broke even. The card had all original stuff you would expect brand new and i was given original receipts with warranty and it looked in decent shape, no dust.

But- My pc is now built and during 3d tests and gaming i can hear coil whine which isnt a big deal, but is REALLY annoying. Now owner has offered to help with rma- if it gets approved or a full refund.

What should i do? I've done some research and people have said coil whine goes away with more use? some suggest leaving a game on for 1-2 days and the whine 'dies'. Because i think $250 for the 290 is quite the buy, no? Should i just keep the card and deal with the whine (if no rma) or get my money back and buy 1; another second hand card for around the same price, or 2, a 270x or pushing my budget $50 extra to get the evga gtx 760

any thoughts or suggestions?

Hello,
I used to own a card that suffered from coil whine. Odd thing was, i only heard it periodically, that is, not with every game i played, of for that matter, not every time i played the same game. -it never went away though, so even after years of use i could still hear coil whine- from time to time. It didn't bother me much though.

If I were you, I'd try the RMA, if that didn't work, I'd stick with the 290 even if its origins are questionable,-since it obviously works fine minus the coil whine.
This all depends however, on if you can/cant stand the whine.
Good luck!
