so this is my problem. ...

iam about to upgrade my on board intel chipset.. (kind of a crap chip on my mobo..) to a dedicated graphics card.. here is my specs

CPU: intel core 2 duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
os: windows XP sp3
ram: 1 Gb
PSU: i dont know maybe 300 watts. bcoz in the sticker here it says 240-280 volts. so i assume that is a 300 watts.. correct me if iam wrong...

i can only give a visual summary for my PSU.. its about 2 and a half inches in height and about 7 inches in length, 3 and a half inches wide it is in a rectangular shape. i think it is a compact PSU bcoz my CPU casing is a SLIMTYPE..
i also have a PCI-e slot in my MOBO i dont know if it can support a DDR2 or a DDR3 class GPU iam really new in upgrading my card so i really needed an advised from the experts..

this is the GPU iam choosing for my rig:

this is a nvidia..,

this one. its much better than all of them and relatively in the same price range. still its a 610 and won't get you very far but its the most compatible with your system specs. low power consumption and is supported with XP machines (surprised you still have one after the support cut-off as of April 8th this year). do you plan on playing games with this GPU?

What is your budget?

I would also recommend 4GB of RAM. It will really improve your experience and performance!

planning that too. what will be best a corsehair brand or G-skill???. but my rig is a 4yr old .. i think upgrading too much is more expensive than buying a new one.. budget?? less than 100 bucks

It's Corsair :p . Crucial ballistix is probably your best choice. Its the cheapest and gives the same performance as the same Mhz, but more expensive RAM. G.skill is also pretty cheap and gives good performance, but Crucial ballistix gives the same performance and is even cheaper =).

Does your MB support DDR3 or DDR2? DDR2 isn't really worth upgrading as it is gives less performance compared to DDR3 RAM but is more expensive... (it isn't being produced anymore).

the 610 won't have any problem playing oblivion. it will also play fallout on medium settings i believe (i have a buddy who has this card). skyrim may be pushing it but i don't doubt it could play at low-medium settings. but yeah you'll need to get a little more RAM in the system.

Ehm the RAM is your 4/8GB. The GPU is something else :$. For RAM, 4GB of DDR2, your motherboard doesn't support DDR3 making it impossible to run DDR3 RAM on a board only supporting DDR2. If you really need it, upgrade to 4GB for the time untill you upgrade your CPU/MB/RAM all in one.

You can probably buy 4GB of DDR2 RAM + a GTX 610 for <100$. The 610 is a very basic card though, don't expect to be able to play new games on it.

if you get 2 GB of RAM you may experience "thrashing" with fallout and skyrim. i recommend 4GB if you have the money for it. RAM: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC2-6400-240-Pin-Desktop-...
GPU: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-1024MB-Graphics-01G-...
this roughly adds up to about $100... but as we have all said its not the best card but because your system is older its difficult to upgrade to current standards regarding games. best of luck!
