So a few weeks ago I bought a new gaming PC. PC was running smoothly without any hiccups until I upgraded to windows 8 pro. After that my fan would kick up and go crazy whenever I tried to play Battlefield 4.
Now in game performance wise there are no drops and a loud fan itself would not lead me go make a thread. However shortly after the fan itself goes nuts i can hear these loud scraping sounds from within the pc itself. As if its wires scraping against the fan. I took care of that by carefully wrapping the wires back and yet the sound persists. Any ideas or solutions behind any of this? If it could be a faulty part I'd like to know before its too late. Thanks for your time.

In case you were wondering the specs in case it has something to do with this.
FX 8320
GTX 760
8gb ram
not sure if the other stuff would matter.

What fan are you talking about?

Since it happened after a software change, perhaps you need to look at your motherboard fan control software; instead of ramping up smoothly it may have defaulted to jump suddenly to a higher speed once a certain temperature is achieved.

Also, if it's a stock CPU fan we're talking about you may wish to replace it with a better one like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO ($30 roughly).

sounds like the bearings in the fan are on their way out and it's making contact with the heatsink at high rpm

Is it the stock cooler?

also, unless your using fan control software, the fans are controlled by the bios so upgrading ti win 8 might just be pure coincidence.

Thank you both for your responses. It is indeed the stock heatsink on the cpu which is causing all of the commotion. As of now my only short term fix seems to be playing on power saver mode to prevent the cpu from acting up. I've ordered the 212 and it should be in shortly so hoping to get this out of the way soon. If anyone is looking for a short term fix playing on power saver will work until you upgrade your fan. Of course a major fps hit is inevitable along with that. Have a good one everybody!
