I have £250 and i am ready to upgrade from this gtx 630... i have been thinking of the gtx 770 or the r9 280x, but for a lot cheaper than those i could get a gtx 760, is it worth the extra money and if so which card should i get.

First of all which cpu do you have? If you have an under powered cpu for the gpu you will loose a lot of performance because of bottle necking. So i cannot recommend a gpu before you list your cpu.

And the PSU. Big jump in power needed when going from the GT630, to the 760 and above.

Than you will definitely be better off buying the Gtx 770. It beats the r9 280x by like 5 fps in almost every game. The only game they are completely neck on neck is battlefield 4, but that is because it is an amd title. Another benefit of the Gtx 770 is the fact that it draws less power and runs cooler than the amd therefore you will also save a bit on your power bills, and maybe get some more life squeezed out of the card.
Another thing I would recommend is getting a new cpu cooler so you can overclock the cpu. Something like a cooler master 212 evo would fit nicely. Or if you want to you can spend a little bit more and get something like a phanteks ph- tc14pe. The fx 6300 is a very good overclocker. That will likely give you some extra fps in some cpu bound games like crysis 3 and battlefield 4.

You have the solution thank you, i dont trust my psu nobody has really heard of them so i might get a new one and i am looking into the cooler master thanks.

There isn't a huge difference between the 760 & 770, I suggest you get the 760 or jump to the 780.

The midrange AMD cpu will limit your performance in some games however you should be fine in Bf4.

The 770 is certainly the better gpu and if you want your gpu to last longer and give you better performance than go with the 770.

I personally would buy the most expensive signle gpu card that my budget permits however the difference will not be huge between the two cards.

The difference between the 780 and 760 is huge!

Sure the difference between a 780 and a 760 is huge, but i don't want to recommend one to him because of his fx 6300. In my opinion it is too under powered for a 780. If he had something like a 8320, or a 3570k i would have told him to get that one straight away.

on the Nvidia website theres a graph which makes the 770 look worth the extra £50, i dont have any more then £250 so 780 is a no no

Depending on the game the fx 6300 may limit performance with the gtx 780 however the same is true with the 770.

As you said earlier if you overclock the fx 6300 it and it will perform similar to the 8320 in some games however games like Bf4 that can apparently utilize all 8 cores which will make the 8320 will shine.

" you didn't say it would perform similar to the 8320 in some games but you suggested getting a good cooler and overclocking"

" Good Idea depending on the game"

The single core performance difference between the 6300 and 8320 is small and can be decreased by overclocking.

Intel cpu's are better for gaming, I would rather have a 3570k. Intel cpu's have better single core performance by a significant margin.

Yeah i would not trust that psu to support my system, It doesn't even have 80+ certification. So instead i have found some good options.

The 770 is a excellent card and certainly worth the extra 50 euro however in my opinion it would take a 4 core i5 to utilize its full potential in many games.

The 760 has similar however slightly lower overall performance to the gtx 670 and the gtx 770 has better performance than the 680 because of the higher clocks and increased memory bandwidth due to the increased VRAM Speed.
