A new GPU would be the best upgrade for that system.

Day Z should work fine on your system, so should Rome 2. The gpu exceeds "recommended" specs for both games. If anything, your bottleneck is your cpu as recommended cpu for rome 2 is an i5 processor.

Only just saw it's a basic AMD not a octo-core AMD.

In that case buy a new motherboard and CPU.

The HD 7850 is a decent card budget card, in order to see a significant increase from it you would need to get a gtx 760 or 770 (or their AMD equivalents). More than likely you are being bottlenecked by your cpu, and getting a better cpu would require changing your motherboard. If this was a per-built computer then the windows would be tied to your motherboard. Basically, if you want to upgrade the cpu, you would need the cpu, motherboard and a new copy of windows (assuming you don't already have one).

8 Gb of ram is good.

Here are a cpu/mobo that would probably fit your needs (I assumed you would not be overclocking):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($177.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock H87 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($78.36 @ Newegg)
Total: $255.36
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Or you could get a Athlon X4 750K which is best cpu for YOUR motherboard if you dont want to upgrade your mobo.

CPU wise, the A8 and the athalon x4 are about the same, the A8 just has the integrated graphics.
