Why does no one buy a used Xeon 6-core?

Hi guys,

I was just wondering (and I'm sure I've missed something here), why does no one buy a used Xeon X5650 or similar off ebay?

They go for around $150 and I can't fathom why no one is buying them!?

Thanks for answering my (hopefully not so silly) question!

Solution
If you are looking at previous gen chips, a 1230v2 would be my pick. It is going for a bit less than a Sandy Bridge 1240 and will be a bit faster, and has a lower TDP.

The motherboards are server grade and generally don't play well with some components. The memory is ECC and is generally slower and the chipsets are not great for gaming. Their big advantage is their large cache, but again, they are server CPUs for a reason.

I actually already won an auction for an E3-1240. It's what I wanted as it's similar to an i7 2600k and will last me until the 14nm chips are out (no more AMD bottlenecks)!

I'm wondering whether I should just go for one of the 6-core ones though? As I said, I'm waiting for 14nm so I was picking a cheap processor and motherboard for the moment.

EDIT: Is ECC-memory a requirement or a feature?? Thanks!

Finally then, would you guys recommend a E3-1240 + motherboard for roughly $270 or a X5675 + motherboard for around $380?

Keeping in mind that the rig will mostly be used for gaming and it will only need to last a year or so.

Thanks guys, you've been a massive help so far.

Thanks again! Unfortunately, I have one last question!

Would this be possible http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1865757/sandy-bridge-2600-overclock.html on the E3-1240? I am planning on purchasing the MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) motherboard. I understand that this mild overclock should work without a problem but I'm not sure, some clarification would be awesome!

Thanks, followed your advice and changed to the E3-1230V2!
