haha this isn't as dumb as that title might suggest.... i hope. anyhow i just got a new evga gtx 780, the first card had what i am used to for thermal paste which is just on the gpu itself not on the surrounding green area, but this new one had it caked around ON the green part as well as the gpu. question is: am i fine to just put it on the gpu itself or should it be on the surrounding green part as well? this is an evga gtx 780 classified and i'm using an ek classy water block. temps are great but i'm just curious since i already had to rma the last one (turns out water doesn't work well when dripping on gpu's!

Solution
The CPU link was just for general tenets, the PDF is more important .... like .... I didn't see you mention anything about the thermal pads which has me a bit concerned.

The EK Blocks ship with Gelid Extreme TIM, the package comes with an little oar shaped thingie that ya use to spread the paste flat like if you were spackling.... I find it easier to apply the paste to the pads ....check out the pic on the link below.

1. Apply the paste to a row of the little Memory ICs (4)
2. Even out, thin with "oar", wiping off all excess
3. Apply pads
4. Rinse and repeat steps 1 thru 3 for other two rows till all 12 done.
5. Repeat Step 1 thru 3 for the 1st VRM / MOFSET row
6...

ok yeah that's what i did, though i went pea method rather than the cross mainly because the size of the tim hole made for too much paste. i just didn't want to cause an issue if the outer edge needed paste.

7. Let the TIM cure a bit....take a snack break.
8. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the top side of pads.
9. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the GPU.
10. Install block.
11. Follow same instructions for pads / TOM fr backplate

naw thermal pads are for quiters! ha just kidding, yes i applied the pads supplied by ek and put thermal paste as instructed, the tim did not come with a scraper but in doing some research the pea method seems like it's the best, or at least as good as other solid methods.

yeah for the mosfets and such it was a line then thermal pad, i didn't put tim under the thermal pads for the memory, do you think that's a problem? in ek's instructions it doesn't mention that it just says you can put it on the mosfets for a slight boost in cooling efficiency.
