So i planned 2 builds for a friend, one intel based and the other AMD based, both with the same budget, but i have the following question which rig should i tell him to buy? both have same RAM, HDD, OS, etc...but i am between an (obviously they have different MOBO, but they are both of average quality)

i5 4670 + R7 260X

or

FX 6300 + R9 270X

i've heard nothing but praise about the i5, can't say the same for the FX (i have the 6300 though, it works decent) but i don't know which one to go for...

You will notice the GPU more than the CPU. I don't really don't agree with the upgrade path. Generally, new Intel chip architecture means new chip socket, so you are locked to a 4th gen I core processor. Generally, people usually stick at an i5 because going to an i7 means a $300+ investment to upgrade. Whereas, the AMD upgrade path is $200 max for a FX-8350.
Here is a GPU comparison:

CPU Comparison:

The comparisons between CPU's is closer than the GPU comparison.
The i5 4670k offers a better upgrade path, however the 6300 and 270x offers better performance now(Graphically).

If they dont wish to upgrade themselves, get the 6300. If they can/want to upgrade later, 4670.
I would recommend the 4670k and later upgrading.

I should also point out that I build with AMD chips and this question is bridging on holly war territory so I'm not going to comment any further on CPU's.

I should also mention that that the 4760 has a newer architecture and performs better per CPU cycle and per core. Both are important to older games. As games take advantage of more than two cores, 6/8 cores will have a better performance impact.

I'd say go with the AMD/ R9. The CPU isn't as good as the Intel chip, but the GPU will provide better game performance today. Since your friend isn't planning on upgrading that's the better path (in my opinion).
