I'm building a new computer at the moment, and was just wondering if windows 8 is worth getting or should i just install windows 7 instead.

I remember when windows 8 came out, it got a lot of bad reviews, that things looked pretty cool in windows 8, has some cool eye-candy features, but doesn't run very smoothly, or has tons of bugs, and just all in all not very practical.

But, it's been a while, so i'd thought i would ask everyone for their opinions on it.

by the way, will all software for win7 work in win 8?

It is if you understand it. Say if you use it on a phone. Or if Windows 7 is just as confusing. It'll also help slightly with game play.

Can you see why I use Windows 7? lol

runs well for me, i havent had anything not run on it. however i have heard of people having trouble with older games.

as for the complaints, start8 pretty much solves that. i havent even looked at the metro screen since i installed. feels just like windows 7 for me.

Have installed 8 on many diverse machines with few failures. If you already have a 7 install you could use, go ahead, but if buying new go for 8. Apart from being a general improvement on 7 there are far less Windows Updates to wade through, and once you get used to the fact that once you're on Desktop there's really little difference apart from the Start Screen layout, and using the Windows key more often. (Windows key plus X gets you Control Panel, Device manager and lots more.)

get win 8 and head over to stardock.com and pick up start8, I also run modernmix. Modernmix helps with and pesky apps like Skype that don't give you the min, max, close buttons at the top of the screen. Another good app that they make is fences, run it at work and keeps my desktop very clean. I'm an it manager so I keep a lot of icons on the desktop for different programs, fences helps keep everything organized.

It depends, if you have been using windows all your life then no. Because winows 8 is sick worthy. To make it even usable for standard windows veterans it need tons of mods. But from a purely gaming and performance view 8 will outperform 7 but not by much.

I guessing you haven't played with windows 8 with a start8 app running on it. One small app and you wont be able to tell your using windows 8. Ive had a friend play on my computer for hours using it not even knowing it was windows 8 till I told him. Hes one of those never leaving win7 cause 8 sucks, completely changed his mind after seeing my laptop.
