hey guys this is my first time asking a question here on this forum, i have actually come across alot of answers that have helped me out but i am stumped with this one. Basically i have a usb flash drive that disconnects on my toshiba l650d laptop. It only happens when i jiggle the stick or like when it moves around, but i have noticed it only happens with this particular usb stick, i even put it in a another usb stick actually 5 different ones in the same usb port and no disconnect, here is what i am stumped with, the usb stick that disconnects if i put it on a different computer or a different port on the same computer, no disconnect at all, the port that it disconnects in if i was to put a usb extension cable and leave that usb stick it would not disconnect and the usb stick is perfectly fine no loose connector at all so what do you think is the problem?

usb sticks are a disposable item at 8gb or less. I doubt there's much in the way of QA on these products. A simple set of tests then it gets packaged along with a million others on the same day. If 10 in a million are no good that's fine. Even 10 or 100.

And who knows what treatment they get between the factory and user? dropped, x-rayed, emf spiked, wet, humid ......
Its mostly easier to replace the usb stick than even have your laptop just looked at. The laptop port and usb stick connector are supposed to be made to tolerances. If the laptop is out a bit, more usb sticks will faulter.

hi thanks for the reply, but i do not think the usb drive is faulty because when i connect to a different computer it does not disconnect at all.

i have had this happen to me with a tdk usb drive in the past, it was a 16gb and i ended up throwing it away thinking it was faulty, now it is happening with a kingston 8 gb, which makes me think its not the usb stick at all.

no other sticks do it, all the other usb sticks work fine, its only this one particular usb stick that disconnect, but it works fine on every other computer i have tried on its so strange.

do you have a usb hub or extension you can plug into the questionable port and try the stick from that to the same port ?

Nice vids Micky. I was in Electronic QA for 20 years. And it just gets me mad how things like usb sticks don't work because of a lack of robust product and process design. But that seems to be the way of things. You don't repair stuff now. You replace it. Ask my son who thinks he's a motor mechanic. lol

i have already done that, and when i do that it does NOT disconnect at all, which is so weird. Only when i plug it in directly straight to the usb port it disconnects with a extension it does not.

i agree i7baby ,
it is the throw away generation everything is disposable , if it breaks down get new , i sometimes think stuff is made on purpose to breakdown so you have to buy another.
I Bought my son a tonka truck and they are cheap plastic now , when i was a boy they were steel and took a beating , i still got one 20 years old ,
his lasted two weeks

sorry ruffblaza back to your question
this is a very strange and puzzling problem

Did you look at Micky's YouTube vids? If a usb is slightly outside tolerance and a usb port is slightly out of tolerance they can add up to not working.

hmm that maybe true, but its just weird, cause i know the usb stick works perfectly because when i put it on a different computer it works, and i also know the usb port is fine cause when i take any other usb stick and put it it does not give me this problem strange...im just glad that its not one of my 64gb ones lol.

i agree better you are having trouble with the cheaper stick , as a precaution though if there is any valuable data you have on the stick/sticks that you are having trouble with
i would back up that info just in case

here is an update on this problem, when i connect it directly on to the usb port it keeps disconnecting and then eventually i get a message saying "this device can perform faster" and then it does not disconnect at all and works flawlessly, its only after i get that message it stop disconnecting, this is so weird.
