GPU crashing Windows 7 and programs

Hi,

My brother has a Toshiba Satellite C850-B687 (Sold in the Middle East) and it has an AMD HD Radeon 7610M plus an Intel HD Graphics 4000 built with the Intel Core i7 3630QM.

After downloading the AMD display driver from the main manufacture's site (http://www.toshibamea.com/TechnicalSupportDetails.aspx?pageid=21&productid=50824), all of the programs on my Windows 7 x64 stopped working, they actually crash upon starting them. (Windows 7 itself works flawlessly)

After removing the driver, everything got back to normal, but I am still stuck here:


  • ■ If I download the stable AMD driver from http://amd.com/, Windows 7 wont start, it would give a blue screen of death while loading Windows.
    ■ If I download the BETA AMD driver from http://amd.com/, Windows 7 would start, but I will start getting blue screen of death randomly (While watching a video, playing a game, rendering, etc...)

He currently has the BETA driver installed, but Windows 7 crashes a lot (BSOD) as I mentioned before.

I tried installing the Intel HD Graphics 4000 from the manufacture's site and from http://intel.com/, but both say that they do not support that "version of Windows". I can assure I downloaded the Win7 x64 ones.

Do have any solution?

I formatted the laptop and reinstalled Windows 7 on it 2 weeks ago, still getting the BSODs.

BTW, I have and error called (Error Code 31) on the Intel HD Graphics 4000 (From the device manager), how can I enable it? There is no option in AMD Catalyst to do so.

Just because yours is faulty doesn't mean all products of toshiba are bad.

Why do they sell faulty products then?

ALL companies have broken things, that's why there's warranty, because there is no way to make everything perfect.

Your logic doesn't make any sense, warranties are for things that break over time, not that "Nothing is perfect".

Anyways "Toshiba fanboy", I need a solution here, not someone commending Toshiba, they dont even care about you, they just care about the money they make.

Anyone ELSE has a solution for both display cards?

I am not a "Toshiba fanboy".

Because a company delivers a faulty product doesn't mean the company has failed, I ordered a gtx 760 from EVGA once, it was broken out of the box, I contaced them and got a replacement, so according to your logic that means EVGA has failed as a vendor, then explain why EVGA is the biggest GPU vendor in the USA if they failed?


And also, maybe it would be handy if you told which BSOD error you received.
 
You need to use the Toshiba driver, not from AMD or Intel for Video.

If the issue happens right after a clean Windows setup soon as you install the drivers, it may be a hardware issue, maybe RAM, maybe the motherboard video chip.

Procedure would be, clean Windows 7 setup (you can use the recovery partition or disks, that will have all the drivers already setup for you), updated drivers from Toshiba, Windows Update, test the programs. By programs, are you talking about ANY program or games?

The reason that the system works without drivers is because the video card does not really activate any of the 3D special functions, so faulty hardware can work then. Soon as you do something more advanced, it crashes.

If the issue happens soon at you install Windows then the drivers, it's probably hardware. If it works fine for a bit then crashes, it could be something you are installing afterwards.

I agree with the fact that it has nothing to do with the fact that it's a Toshiba laptop, this can happen with ANY system. If you have 40 of them and 20 are bad, then you can complain about a particular vendor.

I installed Toshiba drivers, they do work but all other programs stopped working, whenever I open AutoCAD, 3DMax, Revit, Steam, AMD Catalyst Control Center and many other programs, they just crash after starting them. If I reinstall the drivers from http://amd.com/, programs work again but I get random blue screens of death.
 


I have to say the most likely issue is a bad motherboard (technically it's probably the video chip but can't fix that without a new mobo). If you have spare RAM or have more than one RAM stick in the system, you can try to swap that out or test with one RAM stick at a time. Or buy a new RAM stick to test. Although that may cost a bit, it is a lot cheaper than a new motherboard, although on the other hand, RAM is not likely to be the issue. It's probably the mobo, but on the outside chance it's RAM, that is a cheap way to rule it out as the issue.

Up to you really for the next step. A. most likely but pricy mobo swap, if the system is more than a few years old you may want to just pay a bit more and get a new or at least a newer laptop B. a lot less likely but cheaper RAM test first, but you may end up spending cash on the RAM only to find out it did not help. The good part with B, if the RAM is compatible with newer laptops you can use it in any replacement you get if needed.

Its a laptop, and since Toshiba added a low-quality motherboard to a $1000 laptop, I guess that proves my point that Toshiba has "Failed".

So you think its hardware related rather than software related?

Q2: What about the Intel graphics card? Why does it give me Error -31 in the device manager? I installed it manually, but if I use Toshiba's Intel driver, then it would give me a message "Your system doesn't meet the minimum requirements"... I downloaded Windows 7 x64 drivers.
 


Don't know if it's a low quality board since I don't know the model number nor the history of that motherboard or model number overall.

If you have a motherboard issue, the errors from the video card setup are not surprising, it's all tied together. If you have the correct OS for the system, and there are drivers from Toshiba for the OS, and you are installing the drivers clean right after a Windows 7 clean setup, they should install the drivers. Since you have issues with BOTH the Intel and discrete video, that points to a mobo issue.

You can try to do a BIOS update, don't know if you tried that or if I suggested that.
