I bought a GIGABYTE GV-R797TO-3GD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB 384-bit GDDR5
last year with the intention of buying another to crossfire and never got around to it. It's no longer available at retail. Is it possible to substitute a newer 7970 if the specs are the same?

yes, you can even crossfire it with a 7950, or any card that is similar.

What Danbuscus25 said. Even if you can't find a 7970, the R9 280X (essentially the same GPU) will work with your card.
