27" Monitor: 1080p or 1440p?

Currently I'm running a 1080p 144hz TN panel and a 1080p 60hz IPS panel side-by-side (one for photo work, one for gaming) and I've simply decided I like the IPS better. I don't play a ton of FPS, and not at all competitively, so the color reproduction is of higher value to me.

So I've decided to replace the TN monitor with an IPS monitor, and now that I'm looking people seem to be insisting I go with 1440p (particularly because of the size of the monitor, I think) rather than 1080p. While this may seem like a no-brainer to you, I have a couple of hang-ups: One being simply that there isn't a wide range of options here, with American and Japanese brands commanding fairly high prices and Korean brands boasting lower prices but fewer options for things like HDMI (and I will be hooking my consoles to this monitor as well) and swivels (I like to put the screen in portrait mode for photo editing), so I feel like it'd be best to wait for the market to grow a little in that area. That said, people are insisting that I'll be able to tell a huge difference moving to a 27" monitor and staying at 1080p.

For the money I could save I'd like to invest in something else, like new speakers or a better office chair, but if moving up to 1440p is a must, then I'll do it. Thoughts?

(also I'm using this for gaming just about as much as photo editing)

use 1 1080 144hz and one 1440p :D

As far as 50+ fps at 1440p with a gtx 780 , u are better of with 1080p with 780 if really are about fps and smoothness .

Its personal opinion ,

More real estate will help you in editing . As far as color reproduction etc and other stuff IPS and bigger resolution will help you .

I say go with Asus 1440p one using it and very happy , but I use Asus 1080p144HZ for 3D Vision . I like more refresh rates :D
You want an IPS panel so I don't say wait for new ROG swift monitor which has TN panel and 144HZ 3D .

EDIT : resolution difference see this : http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/iQ8eMSuBFWw/maxresdefault.jpg

Hope that helps :) !!

Yes, my other thought was that I would like to stay at around 60 FPS for the games I'm playing. I have a GTX 780, so I'm probably gonna be okay with 1440p for a little while, but the next generation of games may quickly become too taxing at 1440p for me to stay around 60 fps. This is another reason I figured sticking with 1080p for now would be more efficient, and upgrading later (along with my graphics card)
