I bought a prebuilt acer computer about 2 years ago and shortly after I started to getting into gaming after a friend gave me his old Zotac Geforce 9800. Shortly after I upgraded to a MSI 7770 and have been happily gaming until about a month ago. I decided to upgrade to a Powercolor 270x Devil Edition but when It came in the mail it didn't work. I sent it back and ordered another one. Didn't work. I got a third one and same thing happened, it didnt work. Fustrated I decided to try a different brand. I got an MSI R9270x OC Edition and that didn't work either so It wasn't just the PowerColor card. After installing each card the same thing would happen, the PC would turn on and all fan would spin(including the new GPU) but nothing displays on the screen and there isn't a startup beep that normally occurs. Having no access to another PC to test the cards in I started troubleshooting throughout the entir process. I updated the BIOS, reset the BIOS. Cleared the CMOS, and even re installed windows. I even bought a new 730watt PSU to replace the old 500watt one. I am at a loss and wits end. My MSI 7770 still works fine! Throughout the process I made sure to uninstall drivers, and protect against static. If someone could please help.

My specs:
MOBO: Unknown...prebuilt Acer
CPU: AMD FX-4100 Quad Core 3.6ghz
GPU: MSI 7770
PSU: Raidmax RX-730SS
RAM: 8gb Patriot Memory
HDD: WD Caviar Green 1tb 5400rpm
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 120gb
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Sound: Asus Xonar DGX

The most obvious reason why it doesn't work its because of 1 very important component on pre-built PC's is that the power supply is of the sh*t quality. Pre-bult only gives you a power supply that is sufficient for the prebuilt hardware, such as 450w and all of them are non-rated, meaning that the true effective wattage is lower than stated. 7770 doesn't require much power so of course it still works.

To run 270X the minimum is 500w (recommended at least 600w) since the card runs at 180w. Even if your psu is rated at 500W, if its not at least 80+ bronze rating it means the effecitve wattage will only be around 420W. 600W 80+ bronze effective is around 540W. It is not the card, it is your power supply that can't provide the power.

What is the power supply and wattage?

A wise word to everyone who buys prebuilt system, "no matter how cheap those prebuilt are, never buy them if you intend to upgrade. Prebuilt have absolutely the worst hardware they give you and limited options. Always go for custom build."

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked'' bios and may not allow you to change certin hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warrenty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you realy need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out.then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..
