Rare? laptop memory 12gb on a single stick?

Trying to help a friend find a memory upgrade for laptop and coming up with no results.

Her laptop has a single DDR3 204 pin SO-DIMM slot and mobo can only address up to 12GB, as listed it should be tuned to PC3-12800 or PC3-14900.

Does such a stick exist available to the commercial public?

Check it with no DRAM In the slot and will prob find it shows as 4GB, many have like a 4 GB (or other size) stick in a hidden slot, often soldered in

There's many laptops which come with 4gb integrated and only comes with one slot which sounds like what this is. There are only 8gb sodimms right now. Also sizes are always powers of 2; 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.
