SSD/HDD will not recognize each other

Hey all, having an odd situation. Trying to install a new Crucial M500 SSD in my laptop (HP 4540s).

I was going to attempt to clone the drive, but the existing drive would not recognize the new SSD when plugged in with an external USB drive adapter. Says it needs to be formatted, but can't actually be selected or opened to format.

I went ahead and installed the SSD and installed Windows 7 Ultimate and it works great...only Windows will now not recognize the old HDD (or any others) when connected via external adapter. Also says it needs to be formatted. Both drives are known working, and work fine when installed in the laptop.

Ideally, I want the SSD in the laptop, but able to recognize other drives (like the old one with all my data!) attached externally. The drive shows in Disk Management, and I tried reassigning the drive letter but no luck. Still says "needs formatting" when I try to open.

BIOS is set to ACHI, and I don't see any other setting that could be causing the conflict. I also know the USB drive adapter is working, and I've tried more than one. I'm a little confused as to what else to look for here. Any ideas? Thanks!

Solution
try the usb2 ports by the optical drive. Perhaps you haven't installed the usb3 drivers yet (which is what the other usb ports are)

What USB adapter do you have? what do you mean by "I've tried more than one"? Have you tried different enclosures or tried different drives in that same adapter?

In addition to installing USB drivers mentioned by popatim, you also need to check USB settings in the motherboard's system BIOS. I had to enable support for legacy USB devices and install the latest Intel USB drivers during my last motherboard upgrade.
