I am going to do a build(only in 4 months or so) and i plan to use a silence optimized case.
These are the ones i have stumbled upon -
Corsair 550d(949DKK price)
Corsair Carbide 330R(619dkk)
NZXT H440(890dkk)
Fractal Design Define R4(749dkk)

They all have a different type of foam, and i have tried watching a review of every single one of them. I put a price on them, as i have a budget - Around 8000-8500dkk without hdd(i already have one:p)

My question is - For quiet operation, what would be best? Sometimes i hear the H440, sometimes the R4, sometimes the 550D but never 330r(probably because it is the cheapest.

Here is something i think about the cases

Corsair 550D - Expensive, Great looks, doesnt feel like lack of airflow, missing sidepanel and no optional sidepanel(wont matter too much), and i have heard, it is bad quality? Whaaat? please tell me more about that.

Carbide 330r - Smaller version of 550d, worse build quality, cheaper, possibly not as silent.

NZXT H440 - Fan hub(12v though), Looks and sounds like it has a lack of airflow, PSU Cover, Looks great both in white and black/red, I dont know about silence, havent heard since it is a fairly new case. No windowed version(would be better for sound i guess)

Define R4 - To me, the white version looks flimsy, and low quality, Almost too simple of a look/lack of texture, good fan options, not as limited airflow, integrated fan controller.

I feel like it is a mix, but fairly easy to exclude the 330r, if it has much worse silence than the other cases.

What have you guys heard about these cases, and what would your vote be on?(i am not doing a poll)

Thanks in advance

fan controller should be the best thing ofc, just pick a good one and it should do the job, asus fan expert automatically find the lowest fan rpm every fan can spin and the startup fan voltage. that is a nice feature. a silent pc is pretty close to stalling the fans so its good information. a fan controller software or controller must be able to set rpm to an infinitely variable speeds, just 5-7-12volt is useless.

the r4 fan controller does not go low enough at all, and i bet all of them is the same, use the motherboard fan controller like the asus fan expert 2, or any other vendor equivalent. the silencing foam is ok for all cases, not much difference. its the fan speed the make the difference. airflow is also not that important in some ways because you will run the fans at 500-800rpm. just use at least 3 fans in the case.
i got the r4 from fractal and found out that a side fan was helping to cool the 780 a bit extra. try to get a sidepanel with option for fans if you are buying a gpu cooler that blow the hot air inside the case. just get extra fans, theyre cheap and you could tweak and optimize you silent pc.
btw my r4 foam smelled very strong for months, its hard to recommend it because i could not even build in it for 2 days because of it.

I was hoping i could avoid side mounted fans, as they kill the purpose of silent sidepanel... I think i would be fine with bottom intake from 550d right? I dont know if the others support it.

I really feel like the bottom fan in 550d has a chance to deliver performance without loosing out on silence

like i said, my rig was more silent after i removed the sound dampening foam covering the 140mm side fan location, but that was because i had to cool a 780. a lower gpu or more downclocking can fix that. after carefully selecting psu, cpu cooler, and storage solution like an ssd. its the fans on the gpu while under full load that determines the upper sound level of the pc. the NZXT H2 did come recommended on http://www.silentpcreview.com/

hmm, maybe it could help some, but if you got 2 intake fans in front a 3rd intake in bottom must be accompanied with a second exhaust in top or somewhere. 1 intake in front is not enough.
the sidepanel exhaust barely need to spin, because a gpu cooler like gigabyte windforce cooler and that type vent air to the sides and pushes air out.

4 fan is great, just keep a positive air pressure inside the case. there is lots of little openings to vent air out, so if all 4 fans is same size keep the intake fans at 100rpm higher than the exhaust or something like that. and make sure its dust filters on all intake fans.

asus got a excellent software: fan expert 2. get something like that. make sure the motherboard can control 5 fans, as you will probaly have 5, counting the cpu fan. i have a z87 motherboard from asus, and can only control 4 fans, but i got a cheap one. the second cpu fan controller on the motherboard was not controllable for some reason. just a heads up.
