Is it okay to play games with your (gaming) laptop on your lap?

Just wondering, since it seems that laptops with dedicated graphics cards ( think a 6/780m ) get very hot. The bottom seems to get very hot but it's not like i'm blocking the vent, which is on the left side.

Is it just because of my laptop ( medion erazer ) that it's getting so hot that I have to stop playing games since my leg starts to hurt, or is this common among gaming laptops? If I can't play games on my laptop without having them on my laptop I don't see the point honestly.

Maybe an MSI would be better? Any experiences with this?

First of all, laptops would not be put in laps for long periods of time as they can cause burns(I know, ironic right?) With gaming laptops, this is always the case. If gaming on the go, then it's okay. Otherwise, game on a desk with the power cord in to make it maximum efficiency.
