Wireless laptop connection slows when separate PC connects via ethernet?

I recently switched from a wireless adapter to an ethernet cord for my PC, and my GF is now experiencing intermittent slower connection speeds on her laptop when we are both online. Nothing else has changed to my knowledge. If I disconnect, she ramps back up to normal speeds.

She checked for updates for her network adapter and it shows as current.
Any help would be appreciated, as she's getting fairly exasperated.

If your wireless speed degrades because you have ethernet pluged in then your problem is your router.

You can try updating the firmware to newest version on the router.
You can try upgrading it to dd-wrt firmware if your router is capabile. this does come with a mild risk (possibly more depending on router model).
You can buy a better router.
