I can get a used XFX r9 280x on ebay for a really good deal, but the card itself has some drawbacks. Or i could get a new EVGA GTX 770 4gb Classified which cost around 450$. What do you guys think i should go with?

Truthfully, what to get depends on the circumstances. If you want multi-monitor, get the EVGA GTX-770. If you only need single monitor with Medium-High settings on all games get the R9 280. If you want single monitor with high-ultra settings on all games get the EVGA GTX-770. I know you didn't say it was for gaming but mostly gamers buy these GPU's

Both are great and equal in terms of preformance I would not go for 4 gb 770 since it provides no performance increase over 2 gb model ( maybe 3 frames at best in surround). I would look at features at that point considering the cards are this close. Do prefer physx? Mantle? 3d vision?
I personally like Nvidia feature set better so when evenly priced I will favor Nvidia.

Dont get used cards and 770 4gb is not a good deal as there is no noticeable performance increase over its 2gb version. Its better to get 770 2gb around $350

Personally, I'd go with a brand new MSI R9 280X Gaming http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FR6XPL8. The price to performance ratio is much better than the GTX 770 and 3GB VRAM is plenty for heavily modded Skyrim with only two monitors.

Grab the 770 4GB because you are playing Skyrim on multiple monitors.

Don't forget the GTX 770 is only 256-bit which cannot even utilize 4GB VRAM.

It's unrelated. Gtx 770 can use all 4gb regardless of memory bus (I would often make that mistake myself) it just won't improve performance very much with a few frames in surround and none in 1080p or 1440p.
