Had to Shut Down my iMac (OS X 10.6.8) after getting a popup that locked me in place. Dock icons are back, but Finder will not relaunch and all my desktop shortcuts are gone...only background image remains. How can I get shortcuts back, and especially Finder?

I hardly have any experience with macs but this happened when I upgraded from mountain lion to mavericks, I am not sure why this is happening. The only solution I found was to downgrade back to mountain lion, there may be a better solution out there though.
