Dell/HP make good tower servers, so check them out. Dell makes it easy to identify "tower" or "pedestal" servers by appending a "T" to the end of the name.

As far as the "easiest" open source OS goes, there is no such thing. The "easiest" one is the one that you are most familiar with. If this is a business and you're dead-set on an open-source OS as your domain controller, I would also recommend you consider vendors with available support contracts - like Red Hat.

Frankly, I've seen people who recommended certain open-source products w/o much familiarity with them at all. That's not a good business decision, especially if the recommender is no longer with the company & the business is forced to pick up the pieces. So only recommend open-source if there is a local expert & the business has a source for support if the expert isn't available.

"Domain-based" network: Does this mean you need Windows domain?
When you buy the server - Dell, IBM/Lenovo, HP have configurations where Windows Server is preinstalled, and will be cheaper than buying separately. A server for 50 PCs will cost you several grands, so the price of OS should not be deciding factor.

I have to agree as well Dell/HP for servers. Also with the server will you need RAID what will you do as a backup, how much hard drive space will you need? Also if you end up purchasing a server and still plan to use a open source OS make sure there are drives available for that OS. No sense in buying a server and use a open source OS if there are no drivers for it. But I would recommend going with a Windows server OS. In the long run it will be well worth the money.
