Upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Dimension 8250. Can't be done unless you change processors. But I don't know which on of the Athlon 64 x2 processors will fit or work. It's a shame Microsoft wasn't more specific with their hardware requirements for Windows 8.1 Pro, had they been I'd not be out $200 for the upgrade I can't use. Can't seem to find squat on Dell about this so here I am asking at tomshardware. Help please!

Go to dell's support site and enter the service tag number. It will list all the specs for that computer. If I remember correctly, the 4400 is a socket 939.

Won't work: http://www.engadget.com/products/dell/dimension/8250/sp...

The original CPU is made by Intel and there's just no way to replace it with an AMD one without changing the motherboard.

AMD made two versions of the 4400+. Be sure you have the correct one. The 4400+ x2 toledo core was a socket 939 and won't work on that board. The newer version of the 4400+ is a socket 940 (AM2). You need to cross refernce the part# on the CPU with AMD's processor list.
