Hello everyone,
My notebook ASUS X550VC works very bad when transfering some files or installing a big software or a game. In general it can not be used. And when starting it, it need a lot of time to start and run startup apps. I'm running optimizers and defragmenters 3 days a week. It lags while using some programs or games. I received notification while when I played the game about low RAM. What can be wrong? How to fix that lag ? I thinked it might be low RAM or slow HDD(or both). I m thinking to change 1 of that because i dont have money for both (SSD of 120 gb for a system or RAM of 8gb 1600(max for this notebook)). Tell me if u need more informations.I bought it in October 2013. Sorry for if i have grammatical errors, I don't know english very well. Thanks! :)

My specs:
Intel Core i5 3230m 2.6 (turbo 3.2)
4GB DDR3 1600MHz
Nvidia GeForce 720m
750GB 5400rpm HDD
Windows 7 SP1 with all updates

Hi, what is your OS ? WIN 7 32 bits or 64 bits ? If its a 32 bits OS then there's no need to upgrade RAM, if its a 64 bits OS then you can upgrade the RAM to 8 GB.

There is a minimal difference in speed between a 5400rpm and 7200rpm drive, so I think that's not the problem. Yes you can get a SSD as Boot Device if you wish, that will speedup the booting time, and the programs will open faster, but games will not be benefited by SSD.

Lags can happen with some graphics intensive games, as your GPU is not so powerful.

What I think is your OS got corrupted somehow and giving you those troubles. First try to do a format and install a fresh OS, it might solve your problem.

Don't forget to backup your important stuff before you do format. And do you have a Bootable installation media(DVD/USB) ?

You can check your HDD for errors/SMART with the help of vendors diagnostics tool or with :

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

You can check your RAM with : http://www.memtest.org/

If you don't have a installation DVD/USB, I will help you to get one. Good luck.

Here is hdd chech, and memtest did't show any error.

Ok, your HDD and RAM seems to be in perfect condition.

How did you setup your WIN 7 installation in BIOS ? Is it IDE or AHCI for SATA ?

Do a format for both OS's and clean install both. First install the Linux then WIN 7, and install the correct drivers from vendors(ASUS) site.

See how it goes, if the problem persists then you can add more RAM.

I installed in AHCI mode and MBR partition table. Why to install 1st linux and then windows 7 ? :)
I will reinstall when backup important files :) I thought now to install Windows 8.1 and then Ubuntu 14.04 in GPT partition table. What do you think about that ?

This is a rule of thumb to install non-win OS first then a win OS, this way the win OS can handle the boot manager for a dual OS with non-win setup perfectly.

I personally don't like win 8 or 8.1 for the unfriendly interface, but its your choice. First install Ubuntu then install win 8.1.

GPT partition table are for HDD's which are larger than 2.2 TB in size, not for a 750GB HDD. You will be fine with MBR/NTFS. You can also try IDE mode for SATA.

With previous win8.1 install i was in GPT and it was the same like now. Why you think that it would be better with IDE ? I read everywhere that AHCI is better and faster :) I've tried once UEFI mode 1.linux then windows8 (when installing as UEFI it is automatically installed in GPT) but windows 8 doesn't seem to recognize ubuntu. Then i would start liveUSB ubuntu and repair GRUB, after that it would recognize windows 8 and start with GRUB2 menu. I installed this one i'm using right now 1.win then ubuntu, but when needed to install ubuntu it didn't recognized windows7 and all partitions, so I needed to use FixPart to delete old partition table layer, because ubuntu was confused. And every time I install windows 7/8.1 with/withot ubuntu it would freeze for 1-5s after every 5s when transfering file, or after more time it would be lagy while surfing or installing some apps. I play Thief 2014 now and it seems to work fine without lags in low/medium setting(i've tested notebook on "Can I Run It" and it said that my notebook is behind minimum) . But game like Sims 3 with all expansions work fine in start, but after some time of playing it needs several minutes just to start a game and in gameplay it freezez sometimes(its not GPU).And when playing Sims 3 notebook is very hot, and sometimes just on sims 3 it shows low RAM, and 2-3 times it showed a bluescreen. So i'm asking you what is better to replace? HDD with SSD or 4GB with 8GB of RAM ? It's not a bad install or something like that (i think) :)
