Only 65Mb? :( Why?

I have a wireless networking problem. I have 6 wireless devices, a work laptop, a Windows RT tablet, a work iPhone, a personal Windows phone, an Android tablet, and an Amazon FireTV. All 5 devices will only connect to my wireless at 65Mb. (I can't confirm this on my phones, but the tablets and laptop tell me the speed they connect.) I have tried 12 wireless access points and routers, and I always get the same speed. I have tried multiple channels and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The speed doesn't vary to signal strength. I've turned it down to 25% and up to 100% on nearly every AP or router. I live in a 800 sqft one bedroom apartment, and all the devices except the FireTV are in the same room, less than 15 ft away from the AP or router. I have tried putting the FireTV on a wired connection, which is what it is using right now. All I ever get over wireless is 65Mb.

There are a couple of combinations that will get your that speed. Be very careful to get the exact number.

If we assume you are getting very strong signal the most likely option is you are running 20mhz channels with wide guard bands and only have a single antenna..ie no mimo.

This is all controlled by setting in the router. Some routers will not use the 40mhz channels if they detect neighbors transmissions on adjacent channels.

All you can do is change the settings in the router. You should be able to get it to connect at 150m if your force it to 40mhz and narrow channels. Unfortunately the connect speed does not represent usable speed. You very well could get more data though a...

It is all trial and error to see what you can do.

Hmmm... This is interesting info. I remember seeing the settings for channel width and such, but I didn't know much about how that all worked, so I didn't mess with it. I only changed the channels to see if I could get a better connection.

Most of my devices are single antenna. I had thought with a single antenna, I could get up to 150Mb, but that turns out to not be the case. My current router, a Western Digital N900, has 6 antennas, but there is a lot of interference from other apartments in my area. This must be the key. It looks like with my current devices and situation, 65Mb is about the best I can expect. I should be grateful to get this much, from the sound of it. I'll try 40MHz channels, but I don't think I'll get very far with that in my current place.

Thanks.
