I usually do a staggered upgrade cycle, and upgrade a different component in each cycle... Right now, it's time for my CPU, Mobo, and RAM... here's what I have now:

i7-930
ASUS Sabertooth x58 (was on a R3E originally, but it burnt out)
6GB Corsair Dominator
ASUS GTX680 DCUII-Top
Creative Soundblaster X-fi Titanium Fatal1ty
2x Hitatchi 1tb 7200RPM (where in Raid-0, now in AHCI... Raid controller on the Sabertooth is sketchy at best)
Samsung 840 Pro SSD
Corsair HX1050
Corsair 800D

I've been looking at the i7-4770K for a while, but didn't pick it up, because I was waiting on the refresh and the z97 boards... My plan was to get a Maximus VI Hero with the 4770k... but now considering the Maximus VII Hero or Ranger with the 4790 or a 4770k...

So my questions is this: I know the 4790 will require the Z97 board, but is it worth getting the 4790 over the 4770k? additionally if going with the 4770k would it be worth it to get the Z97 over the Z87?

Solution
From the sounds of it, both will be worth waiting for, the new CPU will run cooler and OC better (and for what it's worth they are raising the base clock + .1, I have the Z97 Hero on order so will know more on the improvements then...The 4790K availability is up in the air, sounds like the 1st of June - maybe to coincide with Computex, in the meantime I'm putting a 4770K in to see how the OCing compares to the Z87 Hero

I saw a few places that the 4790 will be out on the 11th... will the 4790k be the same to the 4790 as the 4770k is to the 4770? I'd naturally assume so... I'm not planning on getting anything until maybe July... all depending.
