I recently bought parts to build a system primarily for 1080p gaming. Please do not laugh if some of the elements are missing from the part names. I am very much frustrated as I will define.

Initially I purchased:

Corsair HX 750 Watts
Intel 17 4770k 3.5 Ghz
Asus Maximus VI Hero
G.SKILL TridentX F3-2400C10D-16GTX 16GB 2X8GB DDR3-2400 CL10 240PIN 1.65V Dual Channel Memory Kit
Sapphire R9 290x 4 GB ( I will provide the memory chip info if necessary).

Other parts like the HDD were from previous crapola desktop. (DVD / HDD)

I did not change anything in the bios and by-default the RAM Frequency was only 1333 mhz
Even on default settings everything was working and I was able to play games. I played GRID 2 maxed and was amazed.

Now let’s go to the part where things started to mess up.

When I play The Witcher 2, it auto detected ULTRA settings same as Battlefield 4, Ulta.
I noticed that the GPU fan started to go through the roof (expected after reading reviews) and then BLACK SCREEN.

So basically within few mins of the graphic heavy stuff, I got black screen.

After reading the internet and issues with Black screen I used 2 PCI-E power cables from the motherboard, (8 pins && 6 + 2 pins) but same thing happened. My friend had a brand new Corsair AX 1200i so he gave it to me for testing. I thought the card was drawing too much power so I changed the power supply.

Exactly same thing happened.

Next I replaced the stock cooler with (Kraken™ X60 - NZXT) water cooler and a back plate from NZXT. I thought may be the temperature was rising too much and at 95 degree C the card was shutting down. With custom settings (in the NZXT software) the temperature of the card's GPU is 55 deg C max. Now I entered the BIOS and that’s were I found that the RAM is only at 1333 mhz frequency.

I followed the guide on this forum and moved to XMP 2 I think and I can see that the frequency has changed to 2400 Mhz ( I used the first trick, did not use the manual entries).

Things I have done:

I also tried Afterburner and changed some settings however I have now moved back to default.

The GPU: Sapphire R9 290x is being detected as PCIe 3.0 x8 natvie. – I have it installed on the first Red port. Should it not come up as x16 ?

I have completed uninstalled and re installed the latest drivers. 13.12 to 14.4 latest.

Any suggestions and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

What case and fans? It might be getting really hot inside the case especially with the 290 GPU. If the 290 over heats it might do this also. maybe add a couple of fans.

A faulty 290? Is the 290 installed in the top red slot, the one closest to the CPU?

Sorry, right now everything is out in the open on the motherboard box with full suppose (erasers) in the bottom. I do not want to install everything in the case without throughly testing.

No I have not does any over clocking. I only changed the settings for RAM Frequency.

Would try the XMP to 1 (standard 2400 settings), might add a slight OC to the CPU (it may be straining to carry 2400 with no OC and can cause problems from that, or drop the DRAM to 1600 or 1866, also check in BIOS that Primary Video is set to PCI-E, then check if it is running at 8 or 16, if still at 8 might be a GPU or mobo problem

Yes, R9 290x is cooled with NZXT Krakel x60 :(

Still shows up as PCI-e 3.0 x8 native.
