get the z97 board, its like $5 more expensive, but will have more sata, usb, better overclocking, and support for haswell-e and broadwell.
not sure where you get your information but haswell-e wont be supported on z97 it will be on x99
z97 is pretty much the same as z87 it will support the current cpus and new refresh cpus such as 4790k and 4690k
As for the question evo 212 will fit fine i have a much bigger cooler 612 pwm on the gene 5

In Australia one shop got the Hero in at $299 AUD, or the Gene is $255.
So if there is $45 difference! I realise the Gene is a better spec but I feel as it is a smaller mobo and less pcix1 slots that I am losing out! Lol.
