Just curious. I've made a recovery media from a bunch of discs(6 actually) and now I wish to check it if its working properly. Right now I do not have the HP notebook with me. So I wished to check it in my non HP PC. But its not starting. Does it mean recovery discs have problem or it will work only one HP product?

Thanx

(Oh, I forgot to mention... My recovery discs were created from windows 8.1 machine and now I am trying to test it in my PC having windows 7)

Solution
It won't work at those restore disks are OEM Windows versions licensed to HP as system builders. The keys are identified with HP. Windows 8 has a new licensing . They have the system builder where Windows can be install on a pc to be sold to a different user and a personal use license where a user can install on their own pc.

HP setups are tied to the hardware and will unlikely work on a different PC

I tried using a Dell recovery disk on my own PC in the past, it installed ok, but instantly recognised it wasnt Dell hardware and hardly anything worked

Did you also create a Repair Disk? You have to boot from a Repair disk to get into Troubleshoot/Advanced Options where you can choose to use the Disks to Recover the PC. Presume you created a System Image? In which case you would choose 'Restore from a System Image' If, however, you used HP Recovery, it probably won't work on another PC.
System Images can still be created in 8.1 by using File History, and as that is not obvious I suspect you used the HP version...

+1 orlbuckeye, even if you get it to work it will never activate on the non HP Laptop, plus it will wipe out your W7 install...
However it would be an interesting experiment if you don't mind toasting your W7 laptop, it might prove beneficial to anyone trying to recover a pre-installed 8.1 laptop using the OS from another machine, if , for instance they suffer an HDD failure and have no backup...
