Hi,

As per the title- I get really poor download speeds on my main computer which is a wired connection into the router.

http://oi61.tinypic.com/2nqqm9z.jpg is my speed.

On steam im getting like 100/300 kb per second.

Any thoughts on why this would be?

The chap at Sky said apparently it's normal when i had it at 500kb per second in the master socket. I say **** that

Cheers.

If you mean you have a 4 Mbps (Megabits-per-second) connection then getting 500KB (Kilobytes-per-second) would be about what you should be able to get; 512KBps to be exact. Your ISP provides you a connection and it is advertised in Megabits-per-second (Mb) not Megabytes-per second (MB).

As there are 8 bits in one byte, you have to divide your connection speed by 8. So since 1 byte equals 1024 bits, we multiply 1024 by 4, which equals 4096 bits and then divide that by 8 to get 512 KBps. If we were to do this in MB, it would be much more complicated, so I just showed the end result of 512KBps. You're getting half a MBps connection, as advertised.

It's all a bunch of BS how ISP's advertise their connection speeds, but there's no way around it. As for getting 100 - 300 KBps on steam, that could be because of high traffic or if someone else is also using your internet.

Hope this helps.

Then how is it ive seen screens of my mate's internet- 10mb virgin media- Downloading@ 10 mb per second.
it's nothing to do with steam traffic. Im ther downloading at 250kb per sec and my mate is downloading at 8 mb per second.

Im currently on at 250 kb per second now. Sorry but that is not right.

I wasn't aware Virgin Media offered anything below a 50Mbps connection, but I don't live in the UK. If I had to guess, I would say your friend has a 50Mbps or greater connection.

I'm not sure how to fix your problem (need more specific info), but either there is a big problem with your internet or your connection is just too slow for what you what. Either way, you should call your ISP and ask some questions.

Good luck.
