does running games at non native resolutions degrade image quality?

for example running a game at 1280x720 on a 1920x1080 screen vs a 1280x720 screen (native)

or running a game at 1920x1080 on a 2560x1440 screen vs a 1920x1080 screen (native)

Yes. Lower resolution=lower image quality.

Yeah, it does degrade the quality a little bit. It won't look as sharp, and depending on how far you turn it down, there could be some pixelation.

A 2560x1440 monitor has actual physical 2560 horizontal and 1440 vertical pixels, so going a lower resolution will definitely result in lower image quality, however everything will look the same size(assuming the aspect ratio remains same as you're saying), albeit not as sharp as it otherwise will.
