someone posted that he managed to get it to work using the S405 drivers. At the time only the Win7 driver was available. Now there is a Win8 driver for the S405 that you might want to try.

"I've had difficulty getting the S405 driver to work on Windows 8, but it's now 100% after I did the following:
1 Find the Windows 7 64-bit driver LEXMARK_S400_wcr_64_en.exe from the Lexmark website.
2 When downloading, don't run it, instead choose save as and select a folder to save it to on your computer.
3 Right click on the file name LEXMARK_S400_wcr_64_en.exe and select Troubleshoot Compatibility.
4 In the Select troubleshooting option window, select Troubleshoot program.
5 In the What problems do you notice window, select the first option:
The program worked in earlier versions of windows but won't install or run now.
6 In the Which version of Windows did this program work on before? window select Windows 7.
7 When you click Test the program, it installs and works perfectly.
IMPORTANT...
If you have previously tried to install the printer, REMOVE it from your system in Devices and Printers before uninstalling and reinstalling the software"
